Nyani Quarmyne is a self-thaught photographer, born in India to a Ghanaian father and Filipino mother. He says: “I strive in my work to harness the power of photography to create a visceral emotional connection between viewer and viewed; the power of an image to remind us of our shared humanity and our shared responsibilities to each other and to the planet. My work flows from the sameness that I see in all of us.”
“I moved to Ghana and was confronted with the situation in Totope (where that photo was taken), and climate change suddenly became very immediate and very real. I started to think about how in the West we talk about “mitigation” while in Africa we talk of “adaptation”, suggesting, as always, that the affluent will find ways to remain comfortable, while the less affluent must make do. I took the photo, and the others in the series, with the express intent of making the reality of climate change more tangible for people living the kind of life I had been living in Australia, and of saying, “Well, how would you adapt to this?” ”
